THE SHAMOUN BLOG

November 5 2014
Place: Brisbane

Shamoun has finally hit Australia!! To say that we are excited is definitely the understatement of the year! Our plans to spend the summer in Bali, Indonesia got altered to moving South, down to Brisbane.

We left Langkawi as soon as we got wind of our new plans, and we made our way down the Malaysian coast and had a small run-in with Indo “police” most likely pirates, who luckily only wanted a few bottles of rum. We stopped in Bali for some provisions and fuel. The sail down was pretty amazing and a good shake down for us, as we were land bound for so long!

We did an equator ceremony, with King Neptune himself as we had some pollywogs that we had to shape up into turtlebacks! The pollywogs Leroy and Coraline were summoned to put on a performance for King Neptune and his clan. Heaps of fun was had by all, and everyone on Shamoun is now officially a Turtleback!

The sail down from Bali to Cairns was very exciting as we had a few days of perfect weather, flat seas and breeze and then a few days of hair raising 10 foot swell and 30 knots of breeze. We’ve got some great footage of the roughest part of the trip. We cruised acrossed the Gulf of Carpentera round Cape York, in true Shamoun style with our Sails up and hooning at a lovely 13.6 Knots!

We were met in Cairns by some old friends and we celebrated Chef Megans Birthday in true Aussie style with a Barbie- MATE and some beers!

The trip from Cairns down to our final destination of Brisbane was very chilled out and we were treated to a brief ticky-tour of the Witsundays Islands. What a treat! We had a few encounters with pods of dolphins and “smashed some Mackerel” (as the Aussie fisherman told us we would!).

On arriving in Brisbane we said farewell to Sam our Engineer. He’s off to sail around the world in his own boat. Thanks for everything you’ve given Shamoun Sam! Best of luck on your new adventures and safe sailing!

We also said goodbye to Coraline Vitti and Pat Dorsey who very kindly helped us out for the last few months. Thanks for your help and we’re sure we’ll bump into you again soon!

So for now Brisbane is home and we’re all loving it so far.

Regards,

The Shamoun Team
